Mayport Village is an 80 acre fishing community in N.E. Florida. By it's nature and location, the area has always been a haven for cats. Many make their home here either by birth or abandonment. However, the majority were dumped here over the years because of the erroneous assumption that a fishing village is a cat's version of paradise.
In reality, the opposite is closer to the truth. These cats were dying of disease, malnutrition, neglect and speeding cars. Yet they were multiplying at an alarming rate!
Mayport was hit with a cat explosion! 9 separate colonies, made up of a mixture of feral and abandoned cats were identified. It soon became obvious that there were more cats living in Mayport than people.
Once fixed, community cats become more sedate and will no longer roam for breeding.
The residents and business owners of Mayport Village wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of these cats. Feeding stations were set up and tended by Caretakers and a TNR program was implemented. After several months of regular clinic visits and proof that the program was working; it was decided to try a Mass Trapping. The results were immediate and the population began to stabilize! In 2015 we branched out to trap all over Duval County.
As of August 2022 over 20,000 cats have been spayed/neutered and received vital medical attention in the Jacksonville area. These cats are now living a healthier life and peacefully co-exist with the pets and people of the Jax area, including the beaches. The established and maintained colonies are made up of a mixture of feral & abandoned and have become more manageable.
A properly functioning TNR program in any city has proven to not only be a success, but quite literally, a life saver for the cats!
